The Butterfly Effect in Primary Visual Cortex

چکیده

Exploring and establishing artificial neural networks with electrophysiological characteristics high computational efficiency is a popular topic in the field of computer vision. Inspired by working mechanism primary visual cortex, pulse-coupled network (PCNN) can exhibit synchronous oscillation, refractory period, exponential decay. However, evidence shows that neurons highly complex non-linear dynamics when stimulated external periodic signals. This chaos phenomenon, also known as " butterfly effect", cannot be explained all PCNN models. In this work, we analyze main obstacle preventing models from imitating real cortex. We consider neuronal excitation stochastic process. then propose novel network, called continuous-coupled (CCNN). Theoretical analysis indicates dynamic behavior CCNN distinct PCNN. Numerical results show model exhibits under DC stimulus, chaotic AC which consistent neurons. Furthermore, image video processing mechanisms are analyzed. Experimental on segmentation indicate has better performance than state-of-the-art cortex

Subtask sequencing in the primary visual cortex.

Complex visual tasks can usually be decomposed into a number of simpler subtasks. Whether such subtasks are solved serially or in parallel is subject to considerable debate. Here we investigate how subtasks are coordinated in time by recording from the primary visual cortex of macaque monkeys. The animals were trained to perform both a simple and a composite task. In the simple task, they had t...

The primary visual cortex fills in color.

One of the most important goals of visual processing is to reconstruct adequate representations of surfaces in a scene. It is thought that surface representation is produced mainly in the midlevel vision and that area V1 (the primary visual cortex) activity is solely due to feedback from the midlevel stage. Here, we measured functional MRI signals corresponding to "neon color spreading": an ill...

Reward timing in the primary visual cortex.

We discovered that when adult rats experience an association between visual stimuli and subsequent rewards, the responses of a substantial fraction of neurons in the primary visual cortex evolve from those that relate solely to the physical attributes of the stimuli to those that accurately predict the timing of reward. In addition to revealing a remarkable type of response plasticity in adult ...

Working memory in the primary visual cortex.

T he primary visual cortex is the first cortical area of the visual system that receives information from the external visual world. Neurons in the primary visual cortex have small receptive fields and respond to basic elements of the visual scene. Recent findings, however, show that the primary visual cortex is also involved in cognitive processes, such as visual perception and working memory....

Maps in the Primary Visual Cortex

The operational characteristics of a linear neural network image processing system based on the brain’s vision system are investigated. The final stage of the network consists of edge detectors of various orienations arranged in a feature map, corresponding to the primary visual cortex, or V1. The lateral geniculate nucleus is modeled as a preprocessing stage. Excitatory forward and inhibitory ...
